ChatGPT Search Uses Bing — Not Google. Here's the Setup Guide Most Therapists Are Missing.

Most therapists optimize for Google and ignore Bing entirely. That was a reasonable trade-off until ChatGPT launched live search — powered by Bing's index. Here's the 3-step fix.

ChatGPT Has Two Search Modes — and One Runs on Bing

Most therapists who think about ChatGPT visibility focus on one thing: making sure their practice shows up when someone asks ChatGPT "find me a therapist in [city]." That's a real optimization, and it involves Foursquare, Yelp, and your website content. But there's a second ChatGPT mode — ChatGPT Search — that works completely differently and is powered by an entirely different index.

ChatGPT Search is OpenAI's real-time web browsing feature. When someone clicks the search icon in ChatGPT and asks "anxiety therapist accepting new patients in Denver," ChatGPT doesn't answer from its trained data — it browses the web live and synthesizes results. The index it browses is Bing's.

That's not a typo. ChatGPT Search is built on Bing's web index. OpenAI and Microsoft have a long-standing partnership, and the live search layer of ChatGPT queries Bing. If your therapy practice's website isn't indexed by Bing, ChatGPT Search can't find it — no matter how well you rank on Google.

This creates an optimization gap that almost no therapist is closing. Google captures 90%+ of therapists' SEO attention. Bing gets nearly none. And yet, for an increasing share of AI-powered searches, Bing is the underlying data source.

How Many People Are Using ChatGPT to Find Local Therapists?

ChatGPT crossed one billion users in 2026 (OpenAI), making it one of the fastest-adopted consumer technologies in history. More relevant for therapists: 45% of consumers say they've used AI to find local business recommendations — up from just 6% the year prior (BrightLocal, 2026). That's a 7x increase in 12 months.

The behavior pattern matters as much as the volume. Nearly half of all ChatGPT sessions that involve local service recommendations consist of a single prompt — the user asks for providers, gets a list, and makes a decision. There's no iterative back-and-forth; the AI's first answer shapes who gets called.

The query types that bring ChatGPT Search into play are exactly the ones therapists want to appear in:

  • "Find me a trauma therapist in [city] who accepts Blue Cross"
  • "Anxiety therapist for teens, telehealth, available this week"
  • "Couples therapist near [neighborhood] with good reviews"

These are high-intent searches from people who have decided they want to book. ChatGPT Search's live Bing layer handles queries that need current, location-specific results — which is exactly what therapist searches require. An answer from ChatGPT's training data might be months old. ChatGPT Search pulls from Bing's current index.

The Bing Ecosystem: Four AI Surfaces From One Setup

Here's the business case for spending 30 minutes on Bing: a verified Bing presence doesn't feed only one platform. It feeds four.

SurfaceWhat Bing Data PowersMonthly Reach
ChatGPT SearchLive web results when users click the search icon in ChatGPT1 billion+ ChatGPT users (OpenAI, 2026)
Microsoft CopilotAnswers grounded in Bing's index, including Copilot Health's local layer420 million monthly users (Microsoft, 2026)
Windows SearchBing-powered results in the Windows 11 taskbar and Start menu1.4 billion+ Windows devices
Microsoft EdgeBing-backed answer panel and sidebar in the world's second-largest browser590+ million monthly users

One Bing Webmaster Tools setup and one Bing Places listing reaches all four surfaces simultaneously. The 30 minutes you spend setting this up pays forward every time any of these AI surfaces queries your area for a therapist.

This is the core reason Bing outperforms its raw search market share (approximately 4.5% globally, 10% in the U.S.) for AI discoverability: Bing is the data backbone for Microsoft's entire AI stack, and Microsoft's AI stack is enormous. Copilot Health specifically — Microsoft's dedicated clinician-finder — runs its local layer directly through Bing's business index.

Step 1: Claim Your Bing Places for Business Listing

Bing Places for Business is Bing's version of Google Business Profile. It's the listing that tells Bing — and through Bing, all four surfaces above — your practice's name, address, phone number, hours, specialties, and photos. It's free. It takes about 20 minutes to complete.

How to claim your listing:

  1. Go to bing.com/forbusiness
  2. Sign in with a Microsoft account (create a free one if needed)
  3. Search for your practice by name and city
  4. If your listing exists, click "Claim this business" and verify via email or phone
  5. If it doesn't exist, select "Add new business" and complete all fields

What to fill in — completely:

FieldWhy It Matters
Business nameMust match your website and Google Business Profile exactly — NAP consistency
AddressSuite numbers must be exact; "Suite 205" ≠ "Ste 205" to an AI matching system
Phone numberSame format as your website (not different dashes/dots)
HoursKeep current — Bing uses hours as a filter in local results
CategoriesChoose "Mental Health Counselor," "Psychologist," "Marriage and Family Therapist," etc. — Bing uses categories for specialty filtering
Description150-300 words covering your specialties, approach, who you serve, and location
PhotosAt least 3: your headshot, office exterior, office interior
Website URLYour practice website (not a directory profile)

Completing every field matters because Bing ranks local results on three factors: relevance, distance, and popularity. A sparse listing ranks on distance only. A complete listing ranks on all three.

One thing Bing does that Google doesn't: Bing's popularity score explicitly includes reviews from Yelp and TripAdvisor, not just Bing-native reviews. If you've already built your Yelp profile (which since the OpenAI-Yelp deal is now the primary ChatGPT local data source), those same reviews reinforce your Bing ranking. The platforms are synergistic.

Step 2: Set Up Bing Webmaster Tools

Bing Places covers your local business listing. Bing Webmaster Tools covers your website — it tells Bing how to crawl your pages, discover new content, and understand your site's structure. Without it, Bing indexes your site only when it happens to crawl it. With it, you control when and what Bing sees.

Setup takes about 15 minutes:

  1. Go to bing.com/webmasters and sign in with your Microsoft account
  2. Click "Add a site" and enter your practice website URL
  3. Verify ownership — easiest method: if you already have Google Search Console, click "Import from Google Search Console" and the verification completes automatically. Otherwise use the meta tag or DNS methods.
  4. Once verified, go to Configure My Site → Sitemaps
  5. Enter your sitemap URL (usually yourdomain.com/sitemap.xml) and click Submit

That's the baseline. Bing now knows your site exists and will crawl it systematically.

Why this specifically matters for ChatGPT Search: ChatGPT Search pulls from Bing's current web index. A page that isn't indexed by Bing cannot appear in a ChatGPT Search result — no matter how well it ranks on Google. Your specialty pages, blog posts, and FAQ content are all citation candidates for ChatGPT Search, but only if Bing has indexed them.

Step 3: IndexNow — Instant Bing Indexing for New Content

Submitting a sitemap is a persistent but passive action. Bing crawls it on its own schedule. IndexNow is the active layer — a simple HTTP request that notifies Bing immediately when you publish or update a page.

Without IndexNow, a new blog post or service page might take days or weeks to appear in Bing's index. With IndexNow, it's typically indexed within hours. For ChatGPT Search visibility, faster indexing means your new content can be cited as a source much sooner after it's published.

IndexNow setup depends on your website platform:

  • WordPress: Install the IndexNow plugin (free, by Microsoft) — it pings Bing automatically on every publish
  • Squarespace/Wix: Use Bing Webmaster Tools' manual URL submission interface under "URL Inspection → Submit to Index"
  • Custom Next.js (like WebsiteTherapy sites): IndexNow is built in — every page publish triggers an automatic ping to Bing
  • Any platform: You can manually submit individual URLs in Bing Webmaster Tools under the URL Inspection tool (up to 10,000 per day)

IndexNow pings Bing, Yandex, and other participating engines simultaneously with a single request — it's a standard protocol, not Bing-proprietary. One ping, multiple search engines notified.

What Bing Evaluates for Local Therapy Searches

Unlike Google, which keeps its ranking factors largely opaque, Bing publishes its three local ranking factors explicitly:

FactorWhat Bing Looks AtHow to Improve It
RelevanceHow well your listing and website match the search query — specialty match, service description, keywords in your business descriptionComplete your Bing Places description with your top 3 specialties and your service area; have dedicated pages per specialty on your website
DistancePhysical distance from the searcher to your practice addressAccurate, consistent address across all platforms — Bing uses this as a hard filter
PopularityReviews on Bing, Yelp, and TripAdvisor; website traffic signals; links; social engagementBuild Yelp reviews (they count here too); maintain NAP consistency across directories

The Yelp overlap is significant. The OpenAI-Yelp deal (July 2026) made Yelp the primary data source for ChatGPT's recommendation layer. And Bing's popularity score weights Yelp reviews. A strong Yelp profile therefore helps on three AI surfaces simultaneously: ChatGPT's trained recommendations, ChatGPT Search results, and Bing/Copilot results. If you're prioritizing one review platform in 2026, Yelp has the clearest cross-platform impact.

How ChatGPT Search Chooses Which Therapists to Surface

When ChatGPT Search runs a query for a local therapist, it's executing a Bing search, reading the results, and synthesizing an answer. The mechanics work like this:

  1. Query execution — ChatGPT Search sends the user's query (plus location context) to Bing
  2. Results retrieval — Bing returns its local pack (businesses from Bing Places) plus organic web results
  3. Synthesis — ChatGPT reads the Bing results and composes an answer, typically listing 3-5 practices with brief descriptions
  4. Citation — ChatGPT usually links to the source it found the information from — your website, your Bing Maps listing, or a directory profile

What this means in practice:

  • A missing or incomplete Bing Places listing puts you at a disadvantage in the local pack that Bing returns — even if your website ranks on Google
  • Pages Bing hasn't indexed can't be cited — if your EMDR page or anxiety specialty page is missing from Bing's index, ChatGPT Search can't surface it for specialty queries
  • Content that answers directly wins — ChatGPT Search prefers pages with clear, answer-formatted content: question headings, direct answers, structured data. The same GEO tactics that help with Perplexity and Google AI Overviews help with ChatGPT Search.

This is why the full AI discoverability picture requires both the local listing layer (Bing Places, Yelp, GBP) and the web content layer (indexed website pages). Our breakdown of how each AI engine finds therapists shows that no single lever covers everything — but Bing is one of the highest-leverage ones to add if you haven't yet.

The Bing Readiness Checklist for Therapy Practices

Use this checklist to audit your Bing presence. Each item is free and takes under 15 minutes:

ActionWhereTimeStatus

Business name matches website exactlyBing Places profile2 min☐
Address matches website exactlyBing Places profile2 min☐
Phone number matches website exactlyBing Places profile2 min☐

Total time: roughly 55 minutes to complete everything from scratch. Once done, maintenance is low — update your Bing Places profile only when your address, hours, or phone number changes.

How Long Until This Affects ChatGPT Search Results?

Timeline expectations after completing the checklist:

  • Bing Places verification: Typically 24-48 hours after verification for your listing to appear in Bing local results
  • Sitemap indexing: Bing typically crawls a submitted sitemap within 1-7 days. New pages appear in results within a week for most practices
  • IndexNow: Pages submitted via IndexNow typically appear in Bing within hours
  • ChatGPT Search impact: Once Bing has indexed your pages and listing, they're immediately available to ChatGPT Search — which queries Bing in real time with every search

The entire setup takes less than a week to fully propagate. For a practice that has never touched Bing, the impact on ChatGPT Search visibility is often the single fastest improvement available — simply because the baseline is zero, and there's no waiting for a competitive landscape to shift.

The AI Crawlers Piece: Let Bing's Bots Through

One more technical item worth checking: your website's robots.txt file. Some therapy websites — especially those built on older WordPress themes or through platforms with aggressive crawl-blocking — have settings that prevent Bing's crawlers from reading your pages. If that's the case, your sitemap submission won't help: Bing can see the URLs but can't read the content to index it.

Check your robots.txt at yourdomain.com/robots.txt. It should explicitly allow Bing's crawlers:

User-agent: bingbot
Allow: /

User-agent: MSNBot
Allow: /

User-agent: BingPreview
Allow: /

And while you're there, check that OpenAI's crawlers are allowed too (GPTBot, OAI-SearchBot, ChatGPT-User). A blocked crawler is a hard wall between AI engines and your content. For the full AI crawler allowlist and a ready-to-paste template, see our AI crawlers and robots.txt guide for therapy websites.

Bing Webmaster Tools will also flag crawl errors directly — if a bot is blocked, you'll see "Crawl Errors" in the dashboard. It's one of the most useful diagnostic tools in the setup.

Building Your Bing Presence Alongside the Rest of Your AI Strategy

Bing and ChatGPT Search are one piece of a complete AI discoverability picture. Here's how the setup fits with the other platforms:

PlatformPrimary Data SourceSetup Action
ChatGPT (recommendations)Yelp listings, Foursquare, website contentClaim Yelp listing; ensure website allows GPTBot
ChatGPT Search (live web)Bing's web index + local packBing Webmaster Tools + Bing Places (this post)
PerplexityYour website + Psychology TodayGEO-optimized content, llms.txt, PerplexityBot allowed
Google AI Mode / AI OverviewsGoogle's index + Google Business ProfileGBP verification, Google Search Console
Microsoft Copilot (+ Copilot Health)Bing index + NPI/insurance directoriesBing Places + NPPES accuracy
Apple Intelligence / SiriApple Maps, Yelp, webApple Business Connect listing

The pattern: each AI engine has a local data layer (a specific directory or listing) and a web content layer (what it can read and index from your site). Getting both layers right for each engine is the full strategy. Our complete AI discoverability guide covers all five pillars across all engines — Bing sits in the Technical Access and Listings pillars.

For most therapists, the order of operations that produces the fastest results is: (1) allow AI crawlers in robots.txt, (2) claim and complete GBP and Yelp, (3) set up Bing Webmaster Tools + Bing Places (this guide), (4) optimize your top service pages for GEO. That sequence covers the five major AI surfaces with focused effort — nothing speculative, no expensive tools.

WebsiteTherapy handles all of it automatically: Bing indexing via IndexNow on every publish, AI crawler access pre-configured, structured data on every page. If you'd rather spend your Tuesday hours with clients than in a Bing dashboard, see how it works.
